Call of Duty 4 IS #1. Period. |

So there are lots of statistics out there that suggest Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare as being the number one played game on Xbox Live, the best-selling game of 2007, the 3rd best-selling game of March, etc. All of these are great acclamations for sure.
But how about best-selling game of the past 12 months? Well according to stats Next-Gen.biz has compiled from the NPD and publishers alike, CoD4 is the #1 selling game for the past 12 months.
That's right, it beats out Halo 3 and Guitar Hero III, and every other game that has been released over the past year.
Now try to picture that. Out of all the games released over the past TWELVE MONTHS; let's name a few:
- Madden NFL '08
- Assassin's Creed
- Bioshock
- Devin May Cry 4
- The Orange Box (including TF2 and Portal)
Yep, they're all on the list as well, and each did quite well for themselves. But Call of Duty 4 dwarfed all those sales. How about the rivaling Crysis which certainly has better graphics, but critics are split between which game had a better story and overall value... Well unfortunately, Crysis was not even on this list of 100 best-selling games. We'll just let the numbers speak for themselves.
It's one thing to be the best-selling game of a month or a narrow period of time. But to be named the best-selling game for an entire year's worth of time is a pretty challenging feat, only matched by Goliaths like World of Warcraft and The Sims. But with the much-anticipated release of Grand Theft Auto 4 right around the corner, I wonder if Infinity Ward's title might be stripped. We shall see!

Treyarch, the makers of Call of Duty 3, will be performing some scheduled maintenance on their servers on Tuesday April 22nd between 6:00-8:00am EST or 11:00am-1:00pm GMT if you're across the pond. The rest of you North Americans not in the Eastern Time Zone will have to do the math yourselves.
The CoD4 Variety Map Pack is due to hit the Playstation Network on Thursday, April 24 for all those in North America. Europeans can expect it May 1.
